Dougherty, Annie (Cassaday)  Born 1883  Ireland

A House wife and Women's Activist, Annie was a prominent figure in the women's labour movement of Canada.  She was a member of the Canadian women's club,  she was active in the women's auxiliary of the Carpenters Union,  Elected President of the first women's Independent Labour Party.   She was a staunch agitate for reforms to benefit women workers at home and the paid workforce.  She was elected to the first executive of the Ontario section of the Canadian Labour Party-Apr 1918.  "...one of the most ardent advocates of women's rights...ever to the fore to advance their cause" (Herald)

 

Dowling, Thomas Joseph.  Born 1840 Shannagolden, Co. Limerick, Ireland.  Died 1924 Hamilton.

Ordained in 1924 in Hamilton at St. Mary's Cathedral.  Gained fame early for being a very competent financial administrator.  Became Bishop of Ontario in 1887 until 89.  Was noted to be the most traveled Bishop credited with opening churches as far north as Manitoulin Island. Traveling an average of 40 to 50 miles per day.  Known as being a "Builder Priest" opened many Catholic Schools, Churches and Convents including Sisters of St. Joseph in 1888. (built 9 schools, six churches, and 3 convents)  referred to himself as a progressive Bishop, taking the Latin out of Mass and replacing it with the native tongue of the parishioners (Polish, Italian, German, English. etc)  Was known for being heavily involved in the Irish Community, was famous for singing Irish songs at the St. Patrick's day celebrations,  Acted as Chaplin for the local Fenian militia.  Bishop Dowling has had many great achievements too many to list, he was notorious for championing the cause of the little people, and had much political pull.  One achievement Bishop Dowling will be known for was being instrumental in moving the Irish of "Slab Town" ghetto to rural areas.  He remained Bishop until his death at the time the Oldest Bishop in North America.

 

Duffy, James.  Born 1890 Sligo.  Died 1915 (Ypres, Belgium, buried in West Flanders)

A marathon runner, he won the 1912 Canadian trials for the Olympic games.  He ended up finishing 5th in Stolkholm Sweden.  Winner of Ward Marathon,  and he also the Around the Bay Race in 1913, winning the Boston Marathon in 1914, a huge parade awaited him in downtown Hamilton.  In 1914 he decided to turn professional and 3 months later joined the 91st. Argyle Regiment.  That day in 1915 Apr 23-,   All 305 of his comrades charged a German position in Belgium,  only 27 survived, James Duffy was not one of them.  Dead at 25 years of age. Du Moulin, John Philip.  Born 1836 Dublin, Ireland.  Died 1911 Hamilton.

Ordained in 1862, received an Honorary Degree from Trinity College in Toronto in 1889.  1896 consecrated 3rd Bishop of Niagara, Known for relinquishing his meager salary and moving to a less developed diocese, served 15 years as an Anglican Bishop.
